Here's to your amazing journey!
Leg and foot cramps should not be taken lightly. You should follow up with a doctor anytime you have these symptoms following surgery.
Cramping in your legs can be anything from a blood clot to dehydration or nutritional deficiency. But whatever the condition, you should make an appointment to follow up with your physician as soon as possible.
It is very important that you follow your surgeon's preoperative diet. The goal of the diet is to prepare your body for surgery.
The preoperative diet is specifically designed to decrease liver size. The majority of obese patients have very large livers, which sometimes obstructs the surgeon's view and his ability to maneuver in the abdomen during surgery. Therefore, if a patient does not follow the diet, there is a chance when the surgeon starts the procedure, and the liver has not decreased in size, that he will not be able to continue the surgery. You could potentially be sent home with no band.
Large livers can also increase your risk for bleeding, making surgery more hazardous.
It is very uncommon for someone not to lose any weight after any bariatric surgery, including gastric banding. You should schedule an appointment as soon as possible to discuss this with your surgeon and nutritionist. In addition, I would recommend attending the monthly support group in your area so that you gather as much information as possible about lifestyle changes and making healthy choices.
If you have made all necessary changes to your lifestyle, including walking daily for at least 30 minutes, drinking at least 60 ounces of water daily, not drinking with your meals, eating protein first at every meal, eliminating simple carbohydrates from your diet and consuming only complex carbohydrates (found in vegetables and fruits), you should see significant weight loss. If not, you may need a fill. Call your surgeon's office today and I am sure they can help.
Please see our website section "Chef Dave's Corner". Chef Dave is the first bariatric chef.
He focuses on food tips for people who have had the surgery. Lots of great recipes and ideas.
Since the decision to have surgery is about so much more than a price tag, we do not post pricing for the surgery. We encourage people considering the surgery to attend a seminar and learn more about the procedure, our physicians and our aftercare programs.
We also are happy to provide information on financing programs when you are ready to make the commitment.
It is not too soon to begin the process. Please sign up for one of our free educational seminars and contact one of the surgeons for a consult. Good luck!
As a nurse, insurance is not my area of expertise and I do not know the insurance plans that our surgeons accept. Each office accepts different plans. To inquire, you should contact the JourneyLite surgeons' offices and inquire with them.
Revision surgery is so unique for each patient. I would encourage you to make an appointment to see one of the surgeons to see if you are a candidate for the Lap-band. If the lap-band is not an option your surgeon can certainly guide you for the right treatment for you.
Typically your BMI needs to be greater than 40 to qualify for insurance coverage of the surgery BUT every insurance company has different rules and you will need to check. If you are considering paying cash for the procedure, the physicians who practice in our facilities will discuss performing the procedure if your BMI is over 35 and you are experiencing challenges related to your health and lifestyle.
Sign up for a free seminar and learn more.

At your current height and weight, your BMI is 33.1, indicating a weight classification of obese. If you were to lose 50 pounds, your weight would be 114 pounds and your BMI would be 23, which is considered a normal weight for your height.
Not knowing your medical history, I cannot say whether the LAP-BAND is right for you, but your BMI is certainly an indicator that you need to lose weight and the LAP-BAND procedure may be an excellent option for you. I recommend that you attend a pre-operative educational seminar and schedule a consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons. You could likely achieve your goal weight within six months of surgery, making 2008 a really great year for you personally.
To attend a FREE pre-operative educational seminar, please call us or schedule a seminar online today!
First ask yourself, are your clothes fitting any different? Muscle is denser (more tightly packed) than fat, and with your work-out schedule you could be building lean muscle mass as you are losing fat, which is one reason that the scale wouldn't really show the difference. Keep in mind that the scale is only one indicator - there is how you look and feel as well.
Also, you should make an appointment to see your surgeon - remember he/she is there to help you. Some of the things that will help him to help you is bringing in your food/activity journal. Extra calories or the wrong type of calories can be lurking out there where a second set of eyes can help to pick them up. Remember, also that too few of calories can end up slowing down your metabolism because your body thinks it is starving.
As a final check you could request a follow-up body analysis to compare against one you may have done pre-operatively that could help you to see where you are at from a better picture than just numbers on a scale.
Rob,
PLEASE call your surgeon now! It could be gas but since you are only 3 days post-op your surgeon needs to know. Please call him now.
Barring any major medical issues, your daughter is likely an excellent candidate for the LAP-BAND procedure. More and more young adults and adolescents who have struggled with their weight all their lives are undergoing bariatric surgery to help medically manage their weight and obesity as a disease.
If your daughter is truly committed to making healthy food choices, becoming more active as the weight comes off, and following her surgeon's post-operative nutrition and follow-up program, she would likely be able to lose her excess weight in six to 12 months, and then have a tool to help her maintain her weight-loss for life.
If she hasn't already attended a pre-operative educational seminar, she can sign up online or call us to schedule. This is the first step to taking control of her weight, creating a healthier lifestyle, and ensuring a promising, healthier future.
Painful swallowing is not a normal condition. I would recommend that you make an appointment to see your surgeon as soon as possible.
If your LAP-BAND is too tight, it will slow down the weight loss because you will eat foods that are easy to swallow ... those foods are generally high in calories. Again, please call your surgeon.
I assume that you are speaking of a hiatal hernia. Hiatal hernias are common for many weight-loss surgery patients. In most cases, the hernia is repaired at the time of the placement of the band. Your surgeon may ask you to undergo a test known as an upper GI series prior to surgery so that he/she can ascertain the size of the hernia. A hiatal hernia is usually repaired at the time of surgery.
As with all cases, you should consult your surgeon for a physical examination and any required tests to see if you are a good candidate for the LAP-BAND System procedure.
There is a possibility of a leak. Stay closely in touch with your surgeon so that this issue can be monitored.
As far as restriction when you are eating, remember that fluids will pass through fairly quickly and easily. The true test will be when you consume high-quality, tender, proteins.
Again, keep your surgeon posted and continue to eat healthy foods.
Weight-loss varies from person to person and the amount of weight you lose depends on several factors. You will need to be committed to your new, healthier lifestyle and eating habits. Obesity surgery is not a miracle cure, and the pounds will not come off by themselves. The LAP-BAND System is a valuable tool to support you in achieving lasting results by limiting your food intake, reducing your appetite and slowing down digestion.
It is very important to work with your surgeon to set achievable weight-loss goals from the beginning. A weight loss of one to three pounds a week in the first year after surgery is the goal.
Banding after gastric bypass is possible; however, a few things must be considered before undergoing revision surgery (banding after gastric bypass). First you should consult with a baritric nutritionist to make sure that your dietary intake is appropriate and healthy. If there is room for improvement, you should make those adjustments and see if you lose additional weight. If you are eating appropriately and exercising on a regular basis, then the next step would be to see a LAP-BAND surgeon. You want to be sure that your surgeon is experienced with performing revision surgery. Many JourneyLite surgeon partners have broad experience with banding former gastric bypass patients.
The reason why a fill is not done at the time of surgery is so the tissue surrounding the band can "settle down." It is normal for you to be hungry and you should have the ability to eat anything, as you currently do not have any restriction with the band.
You will feel significantly different after your first fill, and your ability to eat large food volumes will diminish. For now, I recommend that you focus on eating healthy foods and get some type of exercise daily so that you do not gain weight during this time period.
JourneyLite does accept insurance, but each policy is written differently and coverage is usually dictated by an employer. Your policy may or may not cover bariatric surgery and you may or may not have out-of-network benefits. As such, all insurance benefits are verified by our insurance and finance specialists after you have attended a pre-operative educational seminar.
To get moving toward a new, healthier you, I'd like to encourage you to take the first step by attending a free seminar nearest you. Simply click on our FREE SEMINAR button and register to attend.
We look forward to sharing in your exciting weight-loss journey with you!
Your age (in most cases) is not an issue. Being 120 pounds overweight can cause many health problems, and you are fortunate that this has not occured for you.
I would recommend that you stop and ask yourself this question: Is the possibility of having some hanging skin more of an issue than taking that step to becoming healthy? I certainly understand that hanging skin can be an issue for many people, so I would encourage you to attend one of our live support group meetings where you will have the opportunity to speak with other individuals that have asked themselves the very same questions that you are asking yourself. In addition, I would also suggest that you make an appointment to see one of the surgeons who practice at our facilities so he or she can talk with you about surgery and about the financial aspects as well. If your particular insurance policy does not cover the procedure, there are many options available and we would be glad to help guide you through each step of the journey.
There are many factors that determine if patients need plastic surgery after significant weight loss. The main factors to consider include age, if you smoke, how much time you have spent in the sun, how long you have been overweight, if you have had children, your genetics and how much weight you need to lose.
If you are going through your insurance company for approval, the time frame will be dependent upon the requirements of your insurance policy. For instance, many policies require a three to six month multi-disciplinary program which includes diet, nutritional counseling, and exercise. Your surgeon's office and/or our financial and insurance specialist can assist you with the insurance requirements and help get you on your journey to improved health.
For patients who opt to pay for surgery themselves, the timeframe to schedule surgery will depend on the medical clearances required by your surgeon. Most cash patients can be scheduled for surgery within one month after consult.
In most cases, being an insulin-dependent diabetic does not rule you out. I would recommend that you make an appointment for a consultation with one of the surgeons so they can review your medical history and discuss the options with you. Losing excess weight may be a factor in being able to control your diabetes; in many cases, patients are able to go off diabetes medications, including insulin. While we cannot guarantee that your diabetes will resolve, we can share with you the medical studies that suggest that losing your excess weight and learning to eat in a healthy manner and to be more physically active, is extremely beneficial to your overall health.
Having hepatitis C does not necessarily exclude an individual from undergoing the LAP-BAND System procedure; however, as with any surgery, you will need to be personally evaluated, your complete medical history given and reviewed by a surgeon, and you may need specific pre-op testing performed in order to confirm your candidacy. Please plan on attending a JourneyLite seminar in your area for more information and to get started on your journey to freedom from obesity.
Lupus does not necessarily eliminate you as a candidate for LAP-BAND System surgery. You will need to have a few tests run to see if you are a good candidate. Please contact one of the surgeons listed on the site for more information. You may locate a surgeon nearest you by clicking on "Surgeons" or "Our Facilities."
Please contact our Houston facility at (713) 330-9000 and ask to speak with one of our Patient Service Representatives. They will be able to assist you and put you in touch with the surgeon whose seminar you attended. We look forward to walking with you through each step of your journey.
Many of the surgeons who practice at our facilities have taken care of patients with Crohn's disease. It will depend on many factors if you will be a candidate or not. I would recommend attending a seminar and then consulting with a surgeon.
Many of the surgeons that practice at our facilities are currently proctoring to perform this surgery. I am not aware of insurance companies covering this procedure yet. Please call our Tampa facility, as they can help point you in the right direction.
The obvious solution is to eat, but this is not always practical. Because your body responds to things that you do daily, I suspect that people who eat on very regular schedules may be more susceptible to this. For example, if the stomach receives food at noon every day, then the body will expect food at noon, whether food is present or not.
Typically, with adjustable gastric banding, no prescriptions are needed prior to surgery; however, because your medical history is unique and you may currently be on medications for various medical issues, you will need to consult with your surgeon as to whether or not you will remain on your current medications prior, during and/or after surgery.
Walking will be required in order to minimize the risk of blood clots right after surgery. You will be expected to walk at the surgery center before you go home and then you will need to walk daily thereafter. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how long and how often you will need to walk in order to improve your overall health, minimize your risk of blood clots and encourage healing.
Walking in general is a great, inexpensive, low-impact way to exercise. Be sure you purchase some good walking shoes to avoid injury. In addition to acting to elevate your mood, walking is a weight-bearing exercise that promotes bone density and also helps you maintain lean muscle mass, which in turn allows you to burn more calories.
