FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Who do I call to confirm that my insurance covers gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy surgery?

A:

In order to confirm coverage for any weight loss surgery, you should call the customer service number on the back of your new insurance card.
For gastric banding, you will need to ask for confirmation of benefit for procedure (CPT) code 43770, which is the code for gastric banding surgery.

Sleeve Gastrectomy has not been given a CPT as of this time, please contact the JourneyLite PSRs for assistance.

From there, you should call the JourneyLite facility in your area so that a Patient Service Representative can work with you on the next steps for confirming eligibility for surgery, co-payments, deductibles, etc.

Q:How much does the surgery cost if my insurance will not pay for it?

A:At JourneyLiteSM, the first step is to verify whether or not you have benefits for weight-loss surgery through your health insurance policy.  Our insurance specialists are experts and have extensive knowledge and expertise with bariatric insurance verification, pre-certification, and approval.  We will call and verify your benefits and will be happy to speak with you about the options available to you if you do not have benefits.

Q:I have no health insurance coverage and want to know the cost of the procedure.  Can you tell me how much it costs if I pay for it myself?

A:We have many options available if you do not have insurance benefits.  Our finance specialists can discuss the cost of the procedure with you, as it varies slightly by location.

We have relationships with several companies that will allow you to make monthly payments so that you can easily pay for your surgery over time.  This makes having the surgery you need easy to obtain. Our insurance verification specialist is the place to start your journey in this regard so that you receive the best information possible.

Q:If I use a finance company to get a loan to pay for my surgery, what will my monthly payment be?

A:Your monthly payment will vary. There will be a range of payments depending on the cost of your procedure, the term of the loan (how many months to pay), and the interest rate you obtain. As an example, if you have an excellent credit rating, you might get an interest rate of around 10%. If your surgery costs $15,000, and you get a five-year (60 month) loan with a 10% interest payment, your monthly payment will be around $320.00. This is a little over $10.00 per day. At higher interest rates, the monthly payment will be higher. Your Journey Lite insurance specialist can assist you in working with lenders if you decide to finance your surgery.

Q:If I pay for surgery myself, are there any tax deduction benefits?

A:The IRS Recognizes Obesity as a Disease That Qualifies for a Tax Deduction

The IRS has recognized obesity as a disease; therefore, some medical expenses may qualify as a tax deduction.  You should consult with your accountant to see if you qualify.
